The Difference Between TENCEL™ and Cotton
Both covers are made from premium materials and feature the same pure 6A Grade Mulberry silk filling. The right choice depends on your skin type, sleeping preferences and how you like to care for your quilt.
-
Quilts with a TENCEL Cover
Silky smooth, breathable and moisture-wicking, TENCEL™ is naturally resistant to bacterial growth, making it an excellent choice for people with sensitive skin and allergies.
TENCEL™ also absorbs significantly more moisture than cotton, helping you stay drier, cooler and more comfortable throughout the night.
We use only genuine TENCEL™, manufactured by Lenzing TENCEL in Austria.
Best for:
- Sensitive skin
- Allergy sufferers
- People who perspire during sleep
-
Quilts with a Cotton Cover
Cotton absorbs less moisture than TENCEL™, creating a drier sleeping surface, making it an excellent choice for people with normal or dry skin.
The hidden zipper allows the cover to be removed and washed separately from the silk filling, making quilt care much easier.
Our premium 400 thread count cotton is finer and smoother than standard cotton used in bed linen, helping eliminate the rustling noise common with many quilts.
Best for:
- Normal or dry skin
- Customers who want a removable washable cover
- Easy everyday care
What Our Customers Say About Our Silk Doonas
We've received hundreds of wonderful comments from customers sleeping under our silk quilts. Jenny's feedback after switching from a traditional doona says it all:
"The quilt is fabulous. I have been recovering from a fractured fibula for the last 7 months, and the feather doona I had was so heavy on my foot and ankle. Now that heaviness has gone, as it's like just having a sheet on my foot and ankle."

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a quilt, a doona and a duvet?
In Australia, the terms quilt and doona are commonly used to describe the same type of bedding.
Duvet is the term more commonly used in the UK and many other countries.
In the United States, a similar product is often called a comforter, although there are some differences in how comforters and duvets are traditionally used.
What is the best silk for a quilt?
Mulberry silk is widely regarded as the highest-quality silk for quilts.
It is naturally soft, strong and durable, with long, fine fibres that create a lightweight, breathable quilt that helps regulate body temperature.
At Silky U, we use 100% 6A Grade Mulberry silk in all our quilts to provide lasting comfort and performance.
Why aren’t Winter Bundles available with TENCEL covers?
Our Winter Bundle combines two quilts – a Summer and an All Season – that you can use separately or together for extra warmth.
This modular design is only possible with our cotton covers, which feature a hidden zipper that allows the silk fillings to be removed and reassembled.
Our TENCEL™ silk quilts have a fixed, non-removable cover, so they cannot be separated or combined into a Winter Bundle.
For this reason, Winter Bundles are currently available with cotton covers only.
What is GSM?
GSM stands for grams per square metre and measures the amount of silk filling used in a quilt.
A higher GSM contains more silk, making the quilt warmer, while a lower GSM contains less silk and is lighter, making it better suited to warmer climates or people who sleep hot.
For example, our Summer Silk Quilt has 150 GSM of Mulberry silk filling, while our All Season Silk Quilt has 300 GSM for extra warmth.
Can you wash a silk quilt?
Yes, but how you wash it depends on the type of quilt cover.
Silk quilts with a TENCEL™ cover can be machine washed using a gentle cycle, cold water and a pH-neutral liquid detergent.
Silk quilts with a cotton cover have a removable cover that can be washed separately like standard cotton bed linen.
We do not recommend washing the silk filling. Instead, it should be dry cleaned (without trichloroethylene).
Do you put a quilt cover on a silk quilt?
Yes, we recommend using a quilt cover with all of our silk quilts.
A quilt cover helps protect the quilt from dirt, dust and everyday wear, reducing the need for cleaning and helping it last longer.
Even though our cotton-cover quilts feature a removable, washable cover, using a quilt cover provides an additional layer of protection.
Can the silk filling inside the quilt cover move about?
No.
Our cotton-cover silk quilts feature eight attachment points - one at each corner and one in the centre of each side. The silk filling is securely tied to the removable cover, keeping it firmly in place.
Our TENCEL™ silk quilts have a fixed, quilted cover, so the silk filling is permanently secured and cannot move around.
Do your silk quilts make any rustling or noise?
No. Our silk quilts are incredibly quiet.
The silk filling itself doesn't make noise, and any rustling people associate with "silk bedding" usually comes from crisp outer fabrics rather than the silk inside.
Our covers are made from soft, breathable 400 thread count cotton, which is smoother and quieter than the lower thread count fabrics commonly used in many quilts.
